Golf Clubs for Kids

Having raised 3 children, I labored as to when to put my children into adult golf clubs. My fears were that the added weight of the adult clubs would cause the child's swing to "lag behind" and arrive at the impact zone too late, causing swing issues.

I carefully monitored this issue through the years empirically and socially. I read up on the subject, asked other fathers, and observed my own children's progress.

And with some degree of certainty, I offer this advice. From the early years of childhood up to 11 years old, standard kids golf clubs should suffice and provide a decent level of success for most children – especially boys.

Transitioning into Adult Golf Clubs

At age twelve, and/or when the golfer stands five foot five inches or better, standard adult golf clubs should be considered. A child's strength is the only variable that can affect the change from youth to adult golf clubs. If the child is not strong enough to handle the added weight, then youth golf clubs should be kept in play.

Another option, even for boys, is to switch from youth golf clubs, to standard women's golf clubs with iron shafts for the irons. Graphite for all woods should always be used by youth, women, adults, and seniors.

The Importance of Steel Shafted Irons

For beginners, the importance of steel shafted irons is crucial, because steel shafts have absolutely zero torque and the energy transfer is pure and accurate. The feedback from the steel shaft is exactly and directly related to how the club face squared up or didn't square up on impact.

The problem with graphite shafted irons is that they "twist" on impact due to some level of torque. This twist on impact results in side spin and the face overreacting to the energy transfer. The ball flight goes awry even though the actual swing might have been perfect.

So as soon as the golfer can handle it, put him or her into steel shafted irons, either standard men's or standard women's lengths.
